After the initial waves of free agency, the Texans are in much better shape than they were a month ago.
The team has at least partially addressed most of the position groups on the roster. Sheldon Rankins, Denzel Perryman, and Jimmie Ward headline defensive additions, while Shaq Barrett and Robert Woods bring experience to the offensive side.
With that being said, I wanted to take a look at the three position groups that still need to be addressed, whether that be in the draft, through trades, or through free agency.
Quarterback
This is a no-brainer.
The Texans have been without a franchise QB since Deshaun Watson and Texans' fans are hoping that is about to change.
It's clear at this point that Davis Mills is not the answer in Houston. Mills is not a mobile QB, and he sported the 31st-ranked QBR in 2022. Yes, Mills was ranked lower than even Matt Ryan, Carson Wentz, and Baker Mayfield.
Nick Caserio and Demeco Ryans will assuredly take whatever QB that the Panthers do not take at one. Whether that be Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, or Anthony Richardson, any of those players should be an upgrade in Houston.
Also, Case Keenum was signed this offseason and received guaranteed money, implying he will be the backup this season.
Expect the Texans to have a rookie and Keenum in the QB room in 2023.
Center
It seems like the center position will have to be addressed in the draft.
Justin Britt announced his retirement and Scott Quessenberry was inexplicably re-signed. Quessenberry received an abysmal 36.6 PFF rating in 2022, so expecting him to start all season again is probaly not the best idea.
The team did sign former Miami Dolphin Michael Deiter recently. Deiter has 23 games of starting experience in the NFL, but has not overly impressed either.
I would not be shocked to see Houston use an early pick on an interior offensive lineman.
Pass Rusher
It doesn't matter if it's a defensive end, defensive tackle, or outside linebacker, the Texans need depth.
Looking at the roster right now, Jerry Hughes is essentially the only player on the roster with a history of putting up big sack numbers. The problem is, Hughes will be 35 by the time the 2023 season kicks off.
Hughes will need help in the pass rush. Jonathan Greenard, Sheldon Rankins, and Maliek Collins are the other projected starters on the defensive line, and none of those players are known for pass-rushing ability.
Perhaps the team is banking on new addition Chase Winovich to play a big role. Or perhaps they are counting on Sheldon Rankins getting eight sacks like he did in 2018.
Nevertheless, the team could use an infusion of young pass-rushing talent.
Final Thoughts: The Texans have made several nice additions this offseason, but let's not get carried away. This team won three games in 2022, and adding some past-their-prime veterans won't significantly improve that.
However, the team is undoubtedly in a much better position than it was in a year ago. A rookie QB and a new coach are reason enough to tune in in 2023.
