The Denver Broncos have had what many would call a very successful offseason. Their first week of free agency was one filled with big moves that we all hope end up working out for the better.
They spent a lot of money on positions they needed very desperately. On paper, the offensive line is better, the quarterback room is better, the running back room is better, and some other position groups are on their way to getting there too.
However, the Broncos have also lost some guys too. They have lost some guys that were key pieces to the best part of their team in 2022.
Pro Football Focus thinks the Broncos' biggest offseason loss was Dre'Mont Jones, and I think they may be right. Here is what they thought about the move:
The Broncos have a host of edge rushers, and they quickly reunited new defensive coordinator Vance Joseph with Arizona Cardinals interior defender Zach Allen, who Joseph coached up over the past few years, culminating in his breakout 2022 season with a career-high 35 quarterback pressures. That said, over the past two seasons, Jones outpaced Allen in pass-rush win rate (14.7% to 9.8%) and pressure percentage (10.3% to 7.3%) by a good margin.
Dre'Mont Jones, outside of Patrick Surtain, may have been the best defensive player on the team last year. In fact, he was one of their top five players in 2022, which doesn't seem like it's saying a whole lot because of how bad they were, but nonetheless, he was great.
It sucks to see him go, but the two sides couldn't come to an agreement. I agree, this was a huge loss, but getting Zach Allen to replace him was also huge. The Broncos, even with losing Jones, will still have a very good defense, and a great defensive front.
