The Detroit Lions are looking to invest in the quarterback this offseason, but not in the way one might think.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes spoke to reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday to address the team’s shortcomings in adding depth behind Jared Goff.

Holmes left no doubt when discussing Goff saying, “Obviously, we like Jared. He’s our starter.”

With Goff as the only quarterback on the roster currently under contract, the Lions need to find a competent backup option for the 2023 season.

"I feel like last year we kind of left training camp kind of sliding into home plate trying to fill that backup quarterback role," Holmes said at the Combine. "And that's on me. I gotta do a better job of making sure that we're not in that position again. So that is something that we're gonna need to address whether it's here in free agency or upcoming in the draft. But that's something that we've had a lot of conversations about. I gotta do a better job of making sure we get that rectified."

Injuries are a part of football, so it makes sense as to why the Lions are searching to find a stable solution behind Goff. Nate Sudfeld, who served as Goff’s backup in 2022, is an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign anywhere.

There are a handful of quarterback prospects that project to go in the top half of the first round. While Goff's job security is currently solidified, the Lions could use one of its first-round picks on a quarterback to learn behind him for a year or two.
