Saints: Signing Derek Carr will immediately cost one player his job
The New Orleans Saints just signed Derek Carr. What does that mean for another notable player on the roster?
There's a new sheriff in town in New Orleans. By sheriff, the Saints have a new veteran at quarterback. The team and Derek Carr have agreed to a four-year contract.
Carr is a four-time Pro Bowler with plenty of experience in the type of system that the Saints run. His most successful season came under head coach Jon Gruden when he ran an offense very similar to the style of offense that he will have in New Orleans. That's great news.
Sadly, some bad news is on the horizon for another Saints player.
The new beginning for Carr will most likely signal the end of the road for Jameis Winston in New Orleans.
Winston spent three seasons with the Saints. One of those years was purely as Drew Brees' backup in 2020. Winston was the projected starter for his final two seasons with the team, but it never worked out.
Injuries plagued his time with the Saints, and ultimately, New Orleans never got to see a full season of Winston as the starting QB. He flashed at times during 2021, but the offense was quite conservative.
Winston sustained multiple injuries in 2022 that kept him off the field, and Andy Dalton remained the Saints' starter for most of the season.
New Orleans is likely to move on from Jameis because of his contract.
If designated as a post-June 1st cut, the Saints would save $12.8 million. It just makes the most sense for both sides as Winston will look for a new start elsewhere.
The Saints will move forward with Carr as their starting QB for the foreseeable future.
