The Pittsburgh Steelers likely won’t be making one expected move this offseason

The Pittsburgh Steelers don't have a lot of available cap space entering free agency.

That means the team needs to find ways to create some cap room — which obviously means saying goodbye to some players under contract.

One obvious move for the Steelers would be releasing backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

Cutting Trubisky would save Pittsburgh around $8 million in cap space. The Steelers could then find a cheaper backup option and still save around $5 million in cap space.

Perfect scenario, right?

Well, not according to Steelers general manager Omar Khan.

Khan spoke to reporters at the NFL draft combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday and he suggested that he not only wants Trubisky back in 2023, but he also wants him to stick around beyond next season.

That's very surprising to hear from Khan — especially considering some comments from Trubisky earlier this year.

Trubisky indicated to ESPN that he signed too quickly during free agency.

From ESPN:

"Everything happened kind of quick," Trubisky told ESPN recently. "I didn't really have a long time to think of the decision. I wish I would've taken some more time and not just signed the first day of free agency. Looking back on it, just try to do some more research. But I felt like they were interested. I felt like it was a good opportunity to possibly get back on the field, but nothing's guaranteed."

That doesn't sound like a guy that wants to be in Pittsburgh long-term.

In fact, it doesn't really sound like a guy that wants to be with the Steelers in 2023. Trubisky might like the salary he's going to earn next season, but he clearly would prefer a chance to start.

And with several teams facing uncertain quarterback situations in 2023, Trubisky probably wouldn't mind being released so he could pursue some of those opportunities.

But based on what Khan said on Tuesday, it sounds like Trubisky isn't going anywhere.
