Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane threw some shade at safety Jordan Poyer, a pending free agent, on Tuesday at the 2023 NFL Draft combine in Indianapolis.
Unsurprisingly, it had to do with money (isn't that the root of most shade?).
Poyer recently made some comments on his podcast about playing for a team that's in a state with cheaper taxes.
"I would love to go to a state that doesn’t take half my money," said Poyer. "It’s crazy to me how taxes work. Some people will say, ‘You’re already making X amount of money.’ Taxes play a big part in all of our lives…If it wasn’t Buffalo, it’d be nice to be warm. It would be nice to see the sun, maybe, every week or so, every other week at least.”
Beane responded to those comments on Tuesday by suggesting that Poyer should be more worried about being part of a winning franchise.
"I want mine reduced, too," said Beane. "There's always things you fight. As long as you have a winning program, that should supersede some things."
Poyer's comments make it sound like he'd prefer to be somewhere like Florida or Texas (warm climate states without state income taxes). The Miami Dolphins could certainly make sense for Poyer (though it would be tough for Bills fans to watch him play for another team in the AFC East).
To be fair to Poyer, it's not like he's looking for a way out of Buffalo. It sounds like he's open to the possibility of returning to the Bills.
"I’m excited for what’s to come," said Poyer on his podcast. "If that’s Buffalo, I’ve been out there six years and know what to do. If not, that’s just part of the business."
Poyer turns 32 in April, so it's unlikely he receives a long-term deal from anyone.
Pro Football Focus recently projected that Poyer will receive a two-year deal with an AAV of $8.5 million.
The Bills aren't in great salary cap shape, so even $8.5 million annually might be too expensive to keep Poyer in Buffalo.
