Chiefs: Andy Reid is happy for Eric Bieniemy
The Kansas City Chiefs and Eric Bieniemy departed from one another and head coach Andy Reid shared his feelings about the situation.
The Kansas City Chiefs just hired or promoted, I should say, Matt Nagy as their offensive coordinator. The former quarterbacks coach was offered the job when Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator for the last five seasons, took a similar job with Washington to prove himself.
Sure, some Chiefs fans are upset at him for leaving But most understand why he did it. He has had more success over the last five seasons as a coordinator than any other coordinator in the league, yet no returned calls about a head coaching job.
This was about him, and the Chiefs are happy for him. Andy Reid certainly is.
“Yeah, so I’m so happy for Eric [Bieniemy] to have a chance to put his name on an offense and this is his now, you know, he’s working for Ron Rivera who’s a dear friend and, a, you know, more of a defensive head coach and offensive head coach,” Reid said during the NFL Combine media availability. “So this allows Eric to do his thing and, and I’m happy for him. I’m wishing him luck with that.
“I’m also wishing him luck going forward. Obviously, we’re trying to get him to become a head coach, It didn’t work out that way, but that’s not, you know, it’s not over yet. So I think he’s gonna do a heck of a job here and really be able to show his personality within the, within the offense… That press conference was unbelievable. And so here he is, in the country’s capital, and, and, you know, I just can tell you he could end up being president.”
Hopefully, this will help Bieniemy get the job he has been deserving of for the last few years now. Sure, he never called plays for the Chiefs, it was always Reid. But neither did Doug Pederson, but he got the job with Philly.
Then there was Matt Nagy, who was the coordinator for one full season from 2017-2018, and the very next year he took the Bears head coach job.
Pederson went on to win a Super Bowl as a head coach, so obviously, it wasn’t a terrible decision. Nagy lost his job with the Bears. When Nagy was the offensive coordinator in 2017, the Chiefs averaged 25 points per game.
Both of those guys were great – we aren’t here to slander them. However, they had far less success than Bieniemy has had. You can take one of Bieniemy’s seasons, just pick one, any of them, and it was more successful than both of those guys.
Yet no head coaching job yet.
I mean, I know why, and you know why, but we aren’t going to get too deep into that. Just know, if he does well in Washington this upcoming season, the NFL will have no choice but to make this man an NFL head coach.
I think everyone in the Chiefs organization is rooting for Bieniemy.
