Cowboys: Top free agency target off the market after latest NFL news
We know one Dallas Cowboys star really wanted him in free agency.
Dallas Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons led the charge during Super Bowl week to get Daron Payne's attention ahead of the 2023 offseason.
The Washington Commanders defensive tackle would go a long way for the Cowboys defense. And Parsons understood how big of an impact such a signing would have on his own pass-rushing endeavors.
Well, Payne is off the market after the division rival placed the franchise tag on him. As a result, the Commanders will pay him $18.9M fully guaranteed on a one-year deal. The team could also reach a long-term extension before the season starts, though.
When asked about potential additions that he'd like to see the Cowboys make, Micah Parsons quickly thought of Payne.
"I like Daron Payne a lot," Parsons said publicly while on an interview during the week of Super Bowl LVII.
While defensive tackle isn't as high in the Cowboys' priorities as offensive line, wide receiver, and even cornerback, it's definitely a position the team could upgrade at. Last year, the front office decided to rely on several players taking big jumps in their development.
But a dominant three-technique is a game-changer for any pass-rushing unit. However, Payne would've likely drawn a bidding war that would've kept Dallas out of the picture anyways.
It wouldn't be a surprise if the Cowboys still target a less-expensive free agent or look for depth during the 2023 NFL Draft.
