Bears head coach Matt Eberflus isn’t hiding anything when it comes to his ideal prospect at one critical position.

One of the Chicago Bears’ most obvious problems from the 2022 season was its non-existent pass rush. Head coach Matt Eberflus and general manager Ryan Poles will have to put their heads together and find the right personnel to get back to creating havoc in the trenches in 2023.

Eberflus spoke to the media at the NFL’s Scouting Combine held annually in Indianapolis. When asked a question about what he’s looking for up front, the Bears’ head coach kept it simple.

“Big, long, and fast.”

Chicago was deprived of the premier pass rushers Bears fans had become so accustomed to seeing every Sunday. The one player that fit the bill for Eberflus’ check list was Robert Quinn, who was traded in the middle of the season after compiling 18.5 sacks in 2021.

Last season the Bears had the worst pass rush in the entire NFL, managing just 20 sacks in 17 games. It was an atrocious output, but with the talent on the roster, it’s exactly what one would expect.

The Bears have loads of money to spend in free agency, but there are plenty of great options at the top of the 2023 draft class, most notably University of Alabama star Will Anderson. If the team does in fact trade back from the No. 1 overall pick, don’t be surprised if Anderson walks up on stage in a Bears hat.

Perhaps Poles opts to reel in upgrades through both avenues, the draft and the free agency pool. After all, he should be willing to turn over every stone in search of an answer to this crippling deficiency.

The roster will undergo plenty of change in the next couple of months, but if Chicago fails to properly address its pass rush problems, expect them to be picking in the top 10 again next year.
