Bills GM discusses franchise tag option for Poyer and Edmunds
Normally reserved and tight-lipped, Buffalo Bills General Manager Brandon Beane opened up on one of the biggest offseason questions.
The Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane opened up during the media portion of the NFL scouting combine.
The Buffalo front office keeps things relatively tight-lipped in terms of the inner workings of the organization. Just hours removed from the Leslie Frazier announcement, Beane knew some difficult questions were going to be asked.
Fielding questions on an array of offseason hot topics, one answer specifically had Bills Mafia's ears perked up.
It's no secret that the organization has some difficult decisions ahead of them. Two of their premier defensive, All-Pro, players are due for contract extensions. Beane, like pressers before, gave only an inch when fans were hoping for a mile.
Without mentioning them by name, Beane spoke about Tremaine Edmunds and Jordan Poyer and their future with the organization.
With the difficult cap situation the team finds themselves in, one solution floating around was their use of the franchise tag. Admittedly, Bills Mafia would assume the team would use it to bridge a gap for a new contract with Tremaine Edmunds rather than Jordan Poyer.
However, Beane nearly shut down those rumors with just a few words.
While there's a possibility the team could still make the decision, Beane seemed adamant. The front office is always playing 4D chess while the rest of us play checkers, but it's not a good sign for the future of these two superstars.
If Beane holds true to his word and doesn't use the franchise tag, he will either have to pay high-end money or let the two players walk away in free agency. A middle linebacker and top safety on one of the best defensive units in recent memory will have plenty of suitors.
Brandon Beane is going to earn every cent of his contract with tough decisions like these.
