Buffalo Bills safety Jordan Poyer sounded ready to take his talents to a warmer and tax-free climate as recently as last month.

Then the unexpected happened, and Poyer re-upped with the Bills in free agency. There was another option on the table, as well, though. Poyer briefly considered retiring after the Bills’ divisional-round loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

"The day after the game, I was like, ‘Man, F this, I'm done,’” Poyer told Bills reporters at a news conference Thursday. “But I had to kind of decompress a little bit and my wife said the same thing. ‘Jordan, just take a couple weeks.’ I played in the Pro Bowl game, and when I played in the Pro Bow game, I was like, ‘Alright, I’ll be alright. I’ll just get over it and move on.’ It’s football. You win some, you lose some and you move on. Some are harder than others but you move on.

“I knew if I just had some time to get my body right that I’ll be perfectly fine and that’s where I’m at right now. I’ve been able to have some really good training down there in South Florida.”

Poyer, 31, signed a two-year contract with the Bills. Buffalo made key contract restructures to open up cap space, allowing them to bring back Poyer and sign key free agents like guard Connor McGovern and wide receiver Deonte Harty.

It was not a sure thing that Poyer would be back in Buffalo, however. When asked if he was surprised that he returned to the Bills, he said it was “50-50.”
