The Dallas Cowboys have made several moves in free agency after almost a full week of action. There have been trades, cuts, and re-signings that are worth breaking down.

Let's recap and grade their moves so far as the NFL offseason keeps on going.

Re-signings

  • S Donovan Wilson: 3 years, $24M

The Cowboys have historically hesitated to pay up at the safety position. But in keeping Wilson, they're giving Dan Quinn's defense the respect it deserves. The defensive coordinator likes to unleash his three-safety defense thanks to its versatility and Wilson might be the most versatile of the group.

GRADE: A-

  • LB Leighton Vander Esch: 2 years, $8M

Vander Esch will stay on board with a very inexpensive deal worth $8 million plus incentives. With a low-risk contract, the Cowboys are keeping their communicator on defense. The last couple of years have been good for the former first-round pick.

GRADE: B

  • CB C.J. Goodwin: 1-year deal

Goodwin shouldn't make or break the Cowboys' season in 2023. Neither should his contract which will likely be a minimum one. But he's John Fassel's ace on special teams and keeping him was a no-brainer. He's played at least 70% of the team's special teams snaps since 2019.

It gets my lowest grade in this recap simply because it's the move that least pushes the Cowboys closer to winning. That paired with losing Luke Gifford (who provided more LB depth than Goodwin does at CB) to the Tennessee Titans, I'll go with a low score.

GRADE: C+

  • RB Tony Pollard: $10.1M franchise tag

No one should question Pollard's level of play. If this move can be criticized, it's only from a financial point of view. The Cowboys just regretted paying Zeke a long-term deal in 2019. Will paying $10.1 million of fully guaranteed money to an injured RB be a problem? We'll find out. But with it being a one-year commitment, it was probably the right call.

GRADE: B+

Signings

There haven't been any outside signings by the Cowboys yet. See "Trades" for CB Stephon Gilmore's addition below.

Cuts

  • RB Ezekiel Elliott: $10.9M in cap savings (post-June 1st)

It was time. It will hurt to lose Elliott because he was one of the most respected players on the team but there wasn't any way to justify that salary. I respect the Cowboys for ripping off the bandaid on this one. But even still, the team loses a good player because of a bad contract.

GRADE: B+

Trades

  • CB Stephon Gilmore for a fifth-round draft pick

Any time you can add a starting outside cornerback who also happens to be a two-time All-Pro for just a fifth-round draft pick, you do it. While Gilmore is near the end of his career, he's still one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Trades and outside signings are the areas the Cowboys could be better at but they nailed this one.

This could be the very best move the team has made this offseason.

GRADE: A

Free Agency Losses

  • OG Connor McGovern – Bills
  • WR Noah Brown – Texans
  • LB Luke Gifford – Titans
