Bears release veteran QB to create salary cap space
The Chicago Bears parted ways with its veteran signal caller in order to create some financial flexibility.
The Chicago Bears have made plenty of new additions in the first week of the NFL’s free agency period. But limited roster space means those additions must also come with a few subtractions.
The Bears parted ways with veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian on Friday. By releasing Siemian, the Bears cleared $2 million in salary cap space.
Chicago signed Siemian to a two-year deal in 2022. By releasing him one year early, the Bears will eat $500,000 in dead money.
Siemian played in just two games during his only season with the Bears. His lone start of the year came in Week 12 against the New York Jets as Justin Fields was sidelined due to a shoulder injury.
However in pregame warmups against the Jets, Siemian hurt his oblique in pregame warmups. He gutted it out completing 14-of-25 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Unfortunately for Siemian, the injury required season-ending surgery just one week later.
With Siemian’s release, it all but clears the path for newly signed QB P.J. Walker to take over the role as Fields’ primary backup for the 2023 season.
