The Chicago Bears continue in their free agency spending spree by signing former Green Bay Packers TE Robert Tonyan, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The contract is reportedly a one-year deal leaving the Bears with the best tight end depth as they’ve had in quite some time.

In 2022, Tonyan hauled in 53 receptions for 470 yards and two touchdowns. It was his first season back since tearing his ACL in 2021.

Tonyan’s breakout year came in 2020 catching 52 passes for 586 yards and a whopping 11 touchdowns. On top of being a reliable pass catcher, especially in the red zone, he is also a capable blocker.

The Bears and Packers have gone in two opposite directions during the first week of free agency.

The Bears have been the NFL’s biggest spender using its salary cap flexibility to bring in talented veterans at positions of need. Meanwhile, Green Bay appears to be preparing itself for life after Aaron Rodgers.

Perhaps the tables are finally beginning to turn in football's oldest rivalry.
