Cowboys QB Dak Prescott shares a heartfelt post about Ezekiel Elliott
The Dallas Cowboys moved on from the star running back before the official start of free agency.
I don't think anyone can think back on the 2016 Dallas Cowboys without the memories centering around Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott.
Not Dak Prescott alone. Not Ezekiel Elliott alone. Both. Together.
At the time, there was simply no way to talk about one without the other. They were the story of the season. Two rookies taking over the NFL and leading the Cowboys to the No. 1 seed in the conference. It was truly memorable.
I'm not talking about the stats, either. Sure, if we dive into them we'll likely find that Prescott (the quarterback, after all) was much more valuable than Zeke. But in terms of the storyline, it was always the two of them.
Heck, when Dak won offensive rookie of the year, he didn't receive it alone. He had Elliott walk with him to the stage and they both shared the spotlight because deep down, they knew they did it together.
That special and unique bond only grew throughout their careers. But now, the Cowboys have moved on from Elliott. And while it makes sense from a financial and team-building perspective, it won't be an easy decision to process.
Especially for his best friend, Dak Prescott. The Cowboys quarterback recently posted on Instagram stories a picture of himself wearing a "214" cap. The number became an icon of the 2016 Cowboys as younger versions of themselves looked like they'd never play a down of pro football apart from each other.
That's life in the NFL for you. But as Prescott mentioned in a recent interview, change is good.
The Cowboys are ready to move on with Tony Pollard leading the charge, at least for 2023. Whether or not he'll stick around for the long run remains to be seen. But when Dak Prescott hands the ball off, maybe once in a while he'll think "I wish that was Zeke."
