Colts: Targeting Lamar Jackson isn't a conspiracy theory, it's common sense
The Indianapolis Colts are running out of options at quarterback a few days into free agency.
Here are a few things we know about the 2023 Indianapolis Colts:
- They badly need a quarterback.
- They own the fourth overall pick of this year's NFL Draft and there are two quarterback-needy teams ahead of them (Panthers, Texans).
- Lamar Jackson is free to negotiate with any team.
- The Colts BADLY need a quarterback. Oh, I already said that?
Listen, who knows how everything will shake out with the Lamar Jackson saga but all it takes is one team to make something happen. How can you rule out the franchise led by GM Chris Ballard who knows this might be his last chance at finding the right quarterback for the Colts?
Gregg Rosenthal, who hosts the Around the NFL Podcast and writes for the league's official website, put together an article listing the biggest winners and losers of the league's first few days of free agency.
In it, he lists the "Colts Conspiracy Theories" in the "Moving Up" section. Here's his breakdown:
“The Colts have cleared a lot of salary, between trading cornerback Stephon Gilmore and cutting QB Matt Ryan. They’ve already been leapfrogged in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Panthers, who traded with the Bears for the No. 1 overall selection. And with Houston picking second, Arizona drafting third, and Indianapolis going fourth, the Colts could have the third choice, at best, of rookie quarterbacks in April. If there is a team to surprisingly jump into the mix for Lamar Jackson, Indy makes the most sense.”
The way I see it, the Colts have their backs against the wall. Most importantly, the people running the show.
Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz, and Matt Ryan are some of the names the team has tried at the quarterback position only for them to be a painful reminder of the way that Andrew Luck's career came to an end.
Now they get an opportunity to roll a dice loaded against them as at least two quarterbacks will be off the board by the time they're on the clock. Even the best free-agent quarterbacks like Jimmy Garoppolo and Derek Carr aren't an option anymore.
Lamar Jackson would be different.
You know it, I know it, and pretty much everyone who's in touch with football knows it. The fact that the Baltimore Ravens could match any offer made to the former MVP quarterback is used by many as a dissuading factor but if Lamar is not worth even an attempt, then is the franchise really trying to find the right quarterback?
Rosenthal and many others call targeting Lamar Jackson a conspiracy theory. But in reality, it'd be common sense. He's the best shot the team has at success at the most important position in the sport.
Hopefully, the Colts are at least evaluating the possibility.
