The Dallas Cowboys have made a pair of recent moves that will undoubtedly make the roster better. First, the Cowboys reached a deal with the Indianapolis Colts, trading a fifth-round draft selection for cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

Gilmore fills a need in the secondary for the Cowboys and brings an impressive resume with him to the Lone Star State. Although he's aging, Gilmore turned in a strong season last year with the Colts and is exactly what Dallas has needed opposite of Trevon Diggs.

Then, the Cowboys followed that up by making another trade. This time, Dallas parted ways with a pair of late draft selections for wide receiver Brandin Cooks, one of the most consistent pass catchers in the entire league.

As a result, the Dallas Cowboys filled their two biggest areas of concern with two difference-making players. Both of whom have the ability to make a big impact as soon as they step on the field.

And the Cowboys did not give up very much to acquire either player. Which makes both moves look even better as Dallas retools its roster ahead of the NFL Draft.

It remains to be seen how much the Cowboys can take advantage of both trades. Other teams in the NFC will make moves between now and the draft, too.

Still, it is difficult to argue against the Cowboys being a legitimate contender in a wide open conference. Dallas entered the offseason with glaring needs at wideout and corner, and the Cowboys have already filled both areas with proven veterans.

There is still work to be done, but the Dallas Cowboys are on the right track to be serious contenders next season.
