Former Super Bowl Champ would be a great fit with the Cowboys
If the Cowboys want to cap off their off-season in terrific fashion, they should sign this player.
We all know the Cowboys are quite particular in the way they handle their off-seasons.
They preach retaining their own, are always in on guys for the "right price", and they tend to draft BPA when it comes to the draft.
So far this off-season, they have retained their own and made a couple of big trades. One for Stephon Gilmore and one for Brandin Cooks.
They have yet to touch the outside free agent market.
The Cowboys have just under $10 million in cap space available following the Cooks trade per Over the Cap.
How about we put it to use and sign an outside free agent that could solve a long-term hole for the Cowboys?
The Cowboys are known for avoiding the 1-technique position practically every year. They finally addressed that position in Jonathan Hankins last year. They made the trade going into week 8 of the NFL season.
Prior to the Hankins trade the Cowboys best-rushing defense grade per PFF was 77.4. This was against the Los Angeles Rams.
Following the Hankins trade, the best grade they posted was 90.6, against the Houston Texans.
Hankins was what the Cowboys had long needed. Someone who can eat up space and double teams, which allows LBs to step into open running lanes to stop the play for a minimal gain.
With Hankins aging and on the free agent market, the Cowboys 1 tech position is suddenly up for grabs. Who should fill it?
How about A'Shawn Robinson? Not only can Robinson hold down the middle of the defensive line, but he has reached the pinnacle of the NFL by winning the Super-Bowl. Sportrac estimates Robinson's value is in the $8 million range, which fits within the Cowboys' budget.
Robinson was an "integral" part of the Rams run defense, having 20 tackles for loss and, helped hold 7 of the Rams 10 first opponents to under 100 rushing yards.
Robinson has a 73.6 run defense grade over the past two seasons, tying him for 12th among interior defensive linemen, with 46 defensive stops ranking him inside the top 20. All this is despite him missing the second half of the 2022 season with a meniscus injury.
A division rival does have interest, so if the Cowboys are interested, they need to act fast.
