Lions position itself for another big splash in free agency with latest move
The Detroit Lions just cleared nearly $10 million in salary cap space with its latest move.
Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes has been crossing off plenty of items on his offseason to-do list.
The Lions’ latest move came Monday morning when the team restructured EDGE Romeo Okwara’s contract, reducing his 2023 cap hit from $14.5 million to $5.647 million, per Field Yates.
Okwara has played seven seasons in the NFL with his last five being in Detroit. He signed a three-year deal worth $37 million after a breakout season in 2020 where he totaled a career-high 10 sacks. Unfortunately he tore his achilles just four weeks into the 2021 season and didn’t make his return until Week 14 of 2022.
In just five games last season, Okwara recorded eight tackles and two sacks.
With what amounts to nearly $9 million extra to play with in the salary cap, Detroit has the flexibility to continue adding veteran talent through free agency. On Sunday night the team inked safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal further bolstering its defense.
The Lions are pushing all of the right buttons so far. Look for the team to continue adding established talent at positions of need as the offseason rolls on.
