The initial free agency wave has come and gone.
The Bears made a plethora of moves during this period, including trading the number one pick, upgrading the offensive line, and landing the biggest free agent linebacker.
With that being said, let's take a look at the current Bears' depth chart after all of these moves.
Offense
| Position | Starter | Reserves |
|---|---|---|
Quarterback | Justin Fields | PJ Walker |
Running back | D’Onta Foreman | Khalil Herbert, Travis Homer, Trestan Ebner |
Fullback | Khari Blasingame | N/A |
Wide receiver | DJ Moore | Darnell Mooney,Equanimeous St. Brown, Nsimba Webster |
Wide receiver | Chase Claypool | Velus Jones Jr, Joe Reed, Daurice Fountain |
Tight end | Cole Kmet | Robert Tonyan, Jake Tonges, Chase Allen |
Left tackle | Braxton Jones | Larry Borom, Kellen Diesch |
Left guard | Cody Whitehair | Dieter Eiselen |
Center | Lucas Patrick | Doug Kramer |
Right guard | Nate Davis | Ja’Tyre Carter |
Right tackle | Teven Jenkins | Alex Leatherwood |
In 2022, the Bears fielded arguably the least-talented WR group in the league.
It's safe to say that will not be the case in 2023.
It was brilliant GM work by Ryan Poles to land DJ Moore in the trade down with Carolina. Poles also stole Nate Davis from the Titans to beef up the interior.
Justin Fields will also have a new running back and a new tight end after D'Onta Foreman and Robert Tonyan were added on one-year deals.
It's no question that the offense is already much improved. I would expect the Bears to continue to add to the offensive line during the draft, with the left side of the line especially needing depth.
Defense
| Position | Starter(s) | Reserves |
|---|---|---|
Defensive end | Trevis Gipson, Dominique Robinson | Andre Anthony, Terrell Lewis, Gerri Green |
Defensive tackle | Justin Jones, Andrew Billings | DeMarcus Walker, Andrew Brown, Jalyn Holmes, Donovan Jeter |
Outside linebacker | TJ Edwards | Kuony Deng |
Middle linebacker | Tremaine Edmunds | Sterling Weatherford |
Outside linebacker | Jack Sanborn | DeMarquis Gates |
Cornerback | Jaylon Johnson | Jaylon Jones, Michael Ojemudia |
Cornerback | Kindle Vildor | Harrison Hand, Greg Stroman Jr. |
Free safety | Eddie Jackson | Elijah Hicks, Adrian Colbert |
Strong safety | Jaquan Brisker | AJ Thomas |
Nickel | Kyler Gordon | Josh Blackwell |
The defense is improved, especially at the linebacker spot.
However, the defensive line and secondary need some work. Adding talented depth behind Vildor and Johnson should be a priority. The defensive end/pass rusher positions can be improved upon.
Walker comes over to the Bears after having a career year for the Titans in 2022, finishing with seven sacks.
Edmunds and Edwards are both tackling machines that are also excellent in pass coverage. The middle of the field is no longer a weak spot in Chicago.
Specialists
| Position | Starter | Reserves |
|---|---|---|
Punter | Trenton Gill | |
Kicker | Cairo Santos | |
Long snapper | Patrick Scales | |
Kick returner | Velus Jones Jr. | Trestan Ebner, Khalil Herbert |
Punt returner | Velus Jones Jr. |
The kicker and punter positions are probably both open for competition.
Gill was drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but did not have a great rookie season. Gill only pinned 20 punts inside the 20-yard line, and only averaged 46 yards per punt.
Santos actually performed better on field goals than extra points. The kicker went 21-of-23 on field goals, while going 27-of-32 on extra points.
Scales is the longest-tenured Bear, and he will be the long snapper once again in 2023.
Final thoughts: The Bears have vastly improved even before the 2023 NFL Draft. Multiple upgrades have been made on both sides of the ball.
As draft day nears, offensive and defensive line are still problem areas for the team. If the Bears hope to compete soon, Poles needs to absolutely nail this draft class.
