Jalen Ramsey trade could help bring Darius Slay back to Lions

Maybe the Lions didn’t miss out after all.

Jalen Ramsey was always a pipe dream for the Detroit Lions, but it was still nice to see that the team was in on adding one of the best talents in the league, even if this didn't happen in the end.

Still, a need remains for the team that can take the largest jump in the NFC North this season, and it is still very reasonable that the team targets defensive backs in free agency.

The good news for the Lions with the Ramsey trade is that it may have opened the door for another viable option.

If Jalen Ramsey, one of the best corners in the NFL, is only worth a third-round pick and a mediocre tight end, then perhaps Darius Slay, another top corner with a similar contract, will be attainable for the Lions.

Slay going back to Detroit wouldn't be the craziest move in the world. The star corner may have left under different circumstances during the final year of a failing regime, but everything is different now.

The entire vibe surrounding the Detroit Lions has gone from one of negativity to one of hope. Making the playoffs and then playing up to that level of skill is very much on the table for this roster, and Slay would help with that greatly.

The fit as a player is obviously there. Slay has shown that in an undeniable way over the past three years with seven interceptions, 29 passes defended, and two Pro Bowls.

The only question at this point is compensation, and even that should be less of an issue based on what we saw with the trade for Jalen Ramsey.

If that truly is the going rate for one of the best corners in the NFL on a pricey deal, the Lions shouldn't think twice about taking a shot.
