Looking back at the Russell Wilson trade

It has been a year since the trade, where do both teams stand now?

On March 8th, 2022, the Seahawks traded their franchise QB, Russell Wilson, to the Denver Broncos.

This was a monumental moment for the franchise, as Wilson had been with the franchise for a decade and was one of the most accomplished players in team history.

During those ten years, Wilson had nine Pro Bowl selections, more wins than any QB has ever won in his first ten seasons, and a Super Bowl title.

However, after a couple of down years, it was clear it was time to move on.

Overall, the Broncos traded quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round picks (2022 and 2023), two second-round picks (2022 and 2023), and a 2022 fifth-round selection to the Seahawks for Wilson, and a 2022 fourth-round pick.

The Seahawks turned the 2022 draft picks into offensive linemen Charles Cross, defensive end Boye Mafe, defensive end Tyreke Smith, and wide receiver Dareke Young.

Collectively this was a very solid group of players and a group that was part of the best 2022 draft class in the NFL.

In addition, the Seahawks received the Broncos' first and second-round picks in this year's draft. While many thought the Broncos would be picking in the late 20s, they instead handed over the fifth pick in the draft to the Seahawks.

Overall, this is what the Seahawks received for Russell Wilson-

  • Noah Fant, TE
  • Shelby Harris, DL
  • Charles Cross, OT
  • Boye Mafe, DE
  • Tyreke Smith, DE
  • Dareke Young, WR
  • 2023 5th overall pick
  • 2023 37th overall pick

This would have been a great haul, even if Russell Wilson had a good year in Denver. What makes this trade even better is that Seatle sold at the perfect time.

At the time, many thought the trade put the Broncos in Super Bowl contention and the Seahawks in a full-fledged rebuild.

Just a year later, it is clear that take was wildly inaccurate.

Wilson had the worst year of his career last season, throwing for 16 touchdowns (a career low) and 11 interceptions. The Broncos went 5-12 and fired HC Nathaniel Hackett after just one year.

On the other hand, the supposedly rebuilding Seahawks went 9-8 and made the playoffs. QB Geno Smith won comeback player of the year and outperformed Wilson all season.

After one year, this looks like one of the best trades in NFL history for the Seahawks and one of the worst for Denver.

If Seattle can capitalize on their remaining picks, they may not be far off from Super Bowl contention.
