Cowboys expected to 'figure something out' with safety Donovan Wilson

The Dallas Cowboys won’t have it easy when it comes to keeping one of their most important pending free agents.

The Dallas Cowboys are in for a busy free agency this week. But that doesn't mean they'll go shopping for the bigger names in the market. Rather, it probably means they'll reach key in-house decisions on both sides of the ball.

It's the Cowboys' Way. For better or worse, they like their guys.

Perhaps they'll surprise us this year by adding Odell Beckham Jr. or maybe even DeAndre Hopkins. They do need a wide receiver, after all.

But most likely, the most intriguing decisions will happen with players like Leighton Vander Esch, Donovan Wilson, and Connor McGovern among others.

We'll find out in a few hours (or maybe days) but in the meantime, there are whispers about the Cowboys making a strong retention effort with their starting safety.

"Watch for Dallas to try to figure something out with safety Donovan Wilson, a valuable player for Dan Quinn's defense," wrote ESPN's NFL insider Jeremy Fowler in a recent free-agency buzz article.

That will certainly raise some eyebrows.

In recent history, the Cowboys haven't been a team that's known for paying safeties. In fact, you can argue they've undervalued it for years and years.

But doesn't Dan Quinn deserve a solid welcome-back gift after returning to Dallas once more?

Wilson played the second-most snaps among Cowboys' defenders in 2022. And he's arguably the most versatile of Quinn's three starting safeties (the team played plenty of snaps with three safeties on the field).

Wilson isn't likely to break the bank, either. As other big-name safeties are expected to hit the market, the Cowboys' defender won't be the best available.

Pro Football Focus projected him to land a three-year deal worth $5.75M per year.

The Cowboys have embraced the identity of their top-tier defense, which could influence their decisions when it comes to Wilson and even LVE.

Will they keep both? Personally, I believe so.
