Chiefs named a top potential landing spot for overhyped free agent
The Kansas City Chiefs were named as one of the top potential landing spots for one of the offseason’s most overhyped free agents
NFL free agency has arrived, which means it's time for the Kansas City Chiefs to start making some roster upgrades.
After winning the Super Bowl last month, the Chiefs don't have a lot of pressing needs.
The team is pretty much ready to compete for another Lombardi Trophy in 2023, but there are still a few areas they'd be wise to address in free agency.
One of the areas the Chiefs need to address is at the wide receiver position.
Kansas City is hoping to re-sign JuJu Smith-Schuster, but they'll likely lose Mecole Hardman to another team in free agency.
The Chiefs have Kadarius Toney (who has been injury prone at times) and Skyy Moore (still young) on the roster, but they could probably use another veteran option.
That's why CBS Sports thinks Kansas City could be one of the top landing spots for free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.
From CBS Sports: Patrick Mahomes can work with just about anyone out wide, successfully leaning on guys like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Kadarius Toney down the stretch of their latest title run, but Beckham is exactly the kind of savvy red-zone play-maker they're built to deploy. With Smith-Schuster hitting free agency, Beckham could ultimately come cheaper, too.
The hype around OBJ is a bit much for a player who hasn't seen the field in over a year.
Beckham is still just 30 years old (he turns 31 in November) and he looked good with the Los Angeles Rams during his run out west in 2021. But this is a guy who has played in 21 games over the last three years and caught just 67 passes for 856 yards.
OBJ reportedly wants $20 million a year. There's absolutely no way he's worth that amount. The Chiefs should run far, far away from Beckham if that's what it's going to take to land the former LSU star.
If the Chiefs can get Beckham on a cheap one-year prove-it deal for around $8 to $10 million a year, then it could be a smart move. OBJ is motivated to prove that he's still a top wide receiver in the NFL. But after not playing in over a year, there are questions about whether or not he can still play at that level.
Playing with Patrick Mahomes on a cheaper deal would be the best move for OBJ's career. There's no way, however, that Kansas City can pay him $20 million a year. That would be a foolish signing that would hamper the Chiefs' ability to make other key moves this offseason.
