The Indianapolis Colts made quite the splash late on Tuesday night when they signed a deal with… a kicker!

Ah, but not just any kicker. And definitely not just any deal. No, no, no. This time, GM Chris Ballard swung for the fences.

The Colts are signing Super Bowl-winning Pro Bowler Matt Gay to a historic contract, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. According to the insider, it'll be a four-year, $22.5 million deal. That would make it the "biggest ever deal for a kicker in free agency," per Pelissero.

Gay has certainly earned it. In four years in the NFL, he's made 88% of his field goal attempts. In each of his last two seasons, he's made at least 93%.

But even more impressive is Gay's career long-distance attempts, per Pro Football Reference:

40-49 yard attempts: 28-of-33 (85%)
50+ yard attempts: 17-of-23 (74%)

The newest member of the Colts spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and won Super Bowl LVI alongside Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay. He was named a Pro Bowler that same year.

The Colts had no kicker under contract prior to the signing as Chase McLaughlin is set for free agency himself. McLaughlin made 83% of his field goals in Indianapolis last year.
