Buccaneers plan on re-signing CB Jamel Dean to four-year deal
The Buccaneers made a great call with one of their best players.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not expected to be big players in 2023 NFL Free Agency, but that didn't stop them from making a very unexpected move.
Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Buccaneers re-signed cornerback Jamel Dean on Monday. Dean was one of the more sought-after corners on the free agent market, but he decided to stay with the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
It's a huge win for the Buccaneers. With all due respect to Carlton Davis III, Dean is arguably the best corner on the team. So, it's easy to see why the Buccaneers needed to make this move.
But the key here is Dean's price tag. He certainly gave the Buccaneers a hometown discount, because $13 million per year for a starting cornerback is very, very cheap. Hell, CDIII is making nearly $15 million per year and as I said earlier, you can easily argue Dean is the better corner. The deal is even more impressive when considering Spotrac estimated Dean's market value to be around $16.5 million per year.
Now, the Buccaneers head into 2023 with their top-2 corners on board. This is a big deal because the arteries of Todd Bowles' defense exist in the secondary. The team is also looking at the possibility of losing two of three starters at the safety position in Mike Edwards and Logan Ryan. So, it was crucial the Buccaneers get at least one of their starting secondary players back.
