The New England Patriots have taken their first step to re-sign defensive back Myles Bryant by tendering him at the right of first refusal level, per a source.

That means Bryant is set to make $2.6 million in 2023 with the Patriots as long as another team doesn't sign him to an offer sheet. If a team does sign Bryan to an offer sheet, and the Patriots decline to match, then he would go to that team without any compensation coming back to New England.

Bryant, an undrafted free agent out of Washington in 2020, has played 38 games with eight starts in three seasons while primarily lining up at slot cornerback. Bryant has also played outside cornerback and safety during his NFL career.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound defensive back has 123 tackles, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one sack, two tackles for loss and two QB hits in his NFL career.

The Patriots have also re-signed cornerback Jonathan Jones and defensive tackle Carl Davis. They traded tight end Jonnu Smith to the Atlanta Falcons and lost wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.

With safety Devin McCourty retired, Bryant is one potential option to fill in at free safety. Bryant also could continue to man the slot if the Patriots wanted to experiment with moving Jonathan Jones to free safety. The Patriots also have cornerbacks Jack Jones, Marcus Jones, Shaun Wade and Jalen Mills on their roster. Mills has the versatility to play safety, as well.
