Patriots filling major need via veteran first-round pick and from within
The Patriots added two veteran blockers Wednesday morning.
The New England Patriots added two more offensive tackles to their roster Wednesday.
The Patriots are expected to sign 2012 first-round pick Riley Reiff, a source told ESPN’s Dianne Russini. Reiff last played for the Chicago Bears, where he played 534 snaps at right tackle. Reiff spent the majority of his career at left tackle with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings. He also spent one season with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2021.
The Patriots also are using an original-round tender on offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste, a 2019 third-round pick out of West Virginia, The Boston Globe's Ben Volin reported Wednesday. The tender will pay Cajuste $2.743M in 2023. If another team signs him to an offer sheet and the Patriots decline to match, they’d have to send a third-round pick to New England to acquire him. Cajuste’s $2.743M salary is not guaranteed.
Reiff and Cajuste join fellow tackle Calvin Anderson in this offseason’s signings at the position. Anderson was a swing tackle for the Broncos who started 11 games at left tackle and one game at right tackle in the past three seasons.
The Patriots still have Trent Brown and 2022 seventh-round pick Andrew Stueber on their roster. They also re-signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott.
It took until July 26 last year for Reiff to catch on with the Bears, but he had a solid season in Chicago, starting 10 games. Cajuste has played in 17 games, starting five, over the last two seasons.
None of these moves should preclude New England from using a high pick on an offensive tackle in the 2023 NFL Draft. Anderson and Reiff serve as veteran insurance, and McDermott, Cajuste and Stueber could wind up battling it out for one roster spot this summer.
