Recent big NFL news means Colts can target QB Lamar Jackson
The door is now open for the Colts to strike.
Big news will have an impact on the rest of the NFL — and maybe even the Indianapolis Colts. The Baltimore Ravens have officially franchised tagged Lamar Jackson.
The Ravens are giving the former MVP the non-exclusive tag. Which means Jackson is free to negotiate a new deal with other franchises. Baltimore has the right to match any offer or receive two first-round selections in return.
While the Ravens will likely match any offer that comes Jackson's way, the door is now open for other teams to strike. It is not very often that an MVP quarterback is available to sign. That is the case here.
Therefore, the Indianapolis Colts would be wise to take advantage.
Instead of banking on a rookie passer to develop, why not go after Jackson and add the dynamic signal caller to the roster? Imagine the potential of a backfield featuring Jackson and All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor.
Shane Steichen did impressive work with Jalen Hurts as offensive coordinator for the Eagles. In Indianapolis, he could do a lot of fun things with Jackson, who is as dynamic of a runner as there is in the NFL and is only improving as a passer, too.
The odds of this happening likely aren't high. Still, it would be worth the Colts to do their due-diligence and see what it would take to get Jackson in Indianapolis. Especially since one potential suitor — the Falcons — reportedly won't be in the mix.
Such a move would drastically change the trajectory of the team and make the Indianapolis Colts a real threat in a talented AFC. Opportunities like these do not come around often.
