Jaguars: Doug Pederson has the right mindset about Trevor Lawrence's future
Not every NFL HC is approaching this type of conversation like the Jaguars’ Doug Pederson.
The Jacksonville Jaguars' future starts and ends with quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Everyone knows that by now. But when you look at the long-term success of other franchises around the NFL, it's clear you need more.
Real long-term success (what the Jaguars should be pursuing with a quarterback as talented as the one in their ranks) comes from a concentrated effort from the coaching staff and the front office.
Just look at the Kansas City Chiefs as an example.
What they've got in Andy Reid is one of their biggest assets. But it doesn't stop there. GM Brett Veach has been a magician when it comes to team building. And even though Patrick Mahomes' contract is a big one, the team has still managed to have very active offseasons.
Does Jacksonville have that? Only time will tell.
But for now, Jaguars HC Doug Pederson lifted the curtain a little bit and showed the team's mindset is in the right place. Too many times you hear NFL franchises talk as if paying your quarterback is a sign of disaster for the front office.
Just last week, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones claimed that since they had paid Dak Prescott, they can't pay the talent around him. That line of thinking has proven to be wrong time and time again by other front offices around the league.
This isn't lost on the Jaguars coach, who was interviewed by The Athletic's Jeff Howe at the NFL Scouting Combine.
"We know what the future holds,” Pederson said referring to Lawrence's inevitable long-term deal that both sides can start negotiating in 2024. “But it’s also been proven in the NFL that you can pay your quarterback and still keep a pretty good roster around your quarterback. It’s been done. We’ve got to be able to look at those models, too."
That's music to Jaguars fans' ears.
"I guess the beauty, too, is we’ve got the majority of our guys in long-term deals, so that will also help us when we get ready to redo Trevor in a year or so," Pederson added.
I don't think anyone doubts that the Jaguars will get it done when the time comes. But the fact that they're already being transparent about a deal not compromising the team from a salary cap perspective is already a sign that they'll do it right.
That should ease the minds of each and every Jaguars fan. This team seems to have what it takes to make the most out of the Trevor Lawrence Era. And it all starts with the leadership of the team.
