NFL insider says Raiders HC could sign an old friend to help them win again
It makes a lot of sense for the Raiders, honestly.
The Derek Carr-Las Vegas Raiders saga is officially over.
And that's left the Raiders in search of a starting quarterback, even with Jarrett Stidham on the roster.
Many thought Tom Brady would spend the last year of his career in the Las Vegas desert, but that option was thrown out the window thanks to his second retirement.
Aaron Rodgers is still a possibility, but said possibility continues to look smaller and smaller with the New York Jets' recent push.
So, who does that leave for the Raiders?
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Raiders are one of three teams that are likely to have interest in former New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
The move would make a lot of sense. Garoppolo obviously knows the system after spending three seasons with McDaniels in New England. He won't be very expensive either, which allows the Raiders to build around him.
And thats the key part. Garoppolo isn't a guy who can elevate players around him and he's not going to put a team on his back and win games. At least not very often.
But, if you have a good team around Garoppolo -especially a good offensive line- then he can be an effective quarterback that helps a team win. He's also got a bit of a clutch gene in him. So, the Raiders are very likely to avoid the billion second-half collapses they went through in 2022.
Signing Garoppolo also keeps the Raiders in position to draft a quarterback at No. 7. He's definitely a bridge quarterback at this point in his career – he's not a long-term answer, by any means. A QB room of a top rookie prospect, Garoppolo, and Stidham is actually pretty solid.
There's a lot of depth and upside with all three, which is a pretty good spot for a team that's looking for a starting quarterback to be in.
There are definitely accuracy and durability concerns when it comes to Garoppolo, however, and those deficiencies are worrisome. Especially if the Raiders can't improve the offensive line/pass protection during the offseason.
The good news is the Raiders have plenty of cap room and they have the draft picks to do just that. In all, signing Garoppolo is certainly something the Raiders should consider.
