Saints coach could give team inside track to land popular free agent
He could help the Saints land a solid talent.
The New Orleans Saints are making plenty of moves to clear cap space during this off-season. Once again, they are proving that the salary cap is a malleable ideal, and they will try to make the most of it every single year.
There will be a player on the market that may surprise some folks. The New York Jets are moving on from running back James Robinson, and the Saints may make sense for the veteran.
At the surface, it is tough to see a connection between the Saints and Robinson. On a deeper level, the RB has a connection with one coach in New Orleans.
That would be offensive assistant Doug Marrone. He's been working mostly with the offensive line with the Saints, but he was the head coach in Jacksonville when the Jaguars drafted Robinson.
Robinson's best season came under Marrone in his rookie year. The 24-year-old totaled 1,070 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns during that season.
He hasn't reached nearly those numbers in the last couple of years, but tough circumstances haven't helped him. Robinson has dealt with some injury issues, but he is now completely healthy.
The Saints need running back depth behind Alvin Kamara, and Robinson could make the most sense as an affordable free agent option.
