Recent trade could allow Justin Fields to reunite with an old friend
The Bears will have options with the ninth pick, but one player stands out as an intriguing option.
The Bears wasted no time making a blockbuster move after trading the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers last week.
The Bears received a collection of picks and star wide receiver, DJ Moore. Moore is a huge add for a Bears' team that sported arguably the least-talented WR group a year ago.
However, the team should supply Justin Fields with all the weapons he could need. With the Bears now holding the ninth pick, there is an intriguing option to pair with Fields.
Jaxon Smith-Njigba is one of the top WR prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. JSN and Fields played together at Ohio State for one season in 2019.
Recently, the star receiver was asked about the prospect of playing with Fields again.
“We definitely had a little connection back in the day," said Smith-Njigba. "Hopefully we can do it again.”
Smith-Njigba also defended his former QB, labeling Fields' critics as "not very smart."
"They should do some more research, more film watching, more something different," explained the receiver. "He’s whatever you need him to be."
Smith-Njigba also called said Fields is "like a big brother," and that he and Fields "have always talked about teaming up."
Smith-Njigba would further strengthen an evolving WR group in Chicago. Before the 2022 trade deadline, the Bears traded for Chase Claypool from the Steelers.
A potential group of DJ Moore, Chase Claypool, Darnell Mooney, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba would take the one of the Bears' biggest weaknesses and turn it into an immediate strength.
At Ohio State, JSN and Fields connected 10 times for 49 yards and one touchdown. Smith-Njigba credited practice time in Columbus for helping strengthen the chemistry between the duo.
Smith-Njigba's best college season came in 2021, when the receiver caught 95 passes for 1,606 yards and 9 TDs playing with CJ Stroud.
Fields ended his Buckeye career with 63 passing TDs and 5,373 passing yards.
Reuniting this electric duo from college could give the Bears one of the most exciting offenses in the league.
