The Kansas City Chiefs absolutely nailed free agency – for the most part. The only things they still have to figure out is the wide receiver situation, as they need a number one guy, and they still have a hole at the right tackle position, as Andrew Wylie left for the Washington Commanders.
Other than that, they have found a guy that should make them better in every area. Their biggest, or flashiest signing I should say, was probably getting left tackle Jawaan Taylor after both the Chiefs and Orlando Brown Jr. decided they would end their business together. Taylor signed for a four-year $80 million contract.
But, that wasn't their best bargain during the first wave of free agency. A few ESPN analysts think the Chiefs actually had the best bargain of all of the free agency signings.
Here is what they thought:
Mike Tannenbaum, NFL front office insider: Omenihu to the Chiefs. He is a young, ascending pass-rusher who comes to Kansas City for $16 million over two years. That's a great value.
Matt Miller, NFL draft analyst: DE Charles Omenihu to the Kansas City Chiefs. Omenihu comes in on a two-year deal worth $16 million and will fill the roster spot left by Frank Clark. Omenihu had 4.5 sacks in 2022 and gives the Chiefs big-time versatility up front.
If there is anyone Chiefs Kingdom should be thanking, it's Brett Veach, who just continues to show that he is the best general manager in football, or one of the best, for sure. He has done this for a while now, whether it be fleeing other teams in trades, getting a steal in the draft, or signing great, under-the-radar guys in free agency for a good bargain.
The Chiefs are going to keep doing what they do though, which is exactly what the ESPN analyst is giving them credit for – getting the best bargain in all of free agency. They could have chosen signings like Byron Murphey to the Vikings or David Long to the Dolphins. But, Omenihu to the Chiefs sounds better.
