The Kansas City Chiefs will be going into the 2023 season with a different coaching staff. Eric Bieniemy, as we all know now, is no longer with the Chiefs.
This will be the first time the Chiefs will have a different coordinator since 2017 when Bieniemy was promoted to offensive coordinator after Matt Nagy took a head coaching job in Chicago.
Now Bieniemy is the offensive coordinator in Washington under Ron Rivera, but not because he was fired. It was his choice, and Andy Reid thinks it was the right choice, even though he was leaving the Chiefs.
"Obviously, we were all together in Philadelphia, but Ron's main focus is defense," Reid said at the annual league meetings. "I mean, he has to do both. But he's got that defense background. This will give him an opportunity to move in and run the whole show, get my name out of it, and put his name on it. And I think that that's important right now. So I was for it as much as I'm going to miss him, I was for it because he deserves an opportunity. Nobody works harder than EB.
"So he deserves that opportunity to become a head coach. And I think this will allow people to see his personality, see how he handles the whole squad calling, plays, everything, you know, the whole show. And I think that will help him for a head coach."
Reid obviously thought he was holding back Bieniemy from getting a head coaching job, as he had been looking for one for several years. Winning two Super Bowls as an offensive coordinator of the best offense in football in the last five years, and he still hadn't had the chance.
So obviously, Reid agreed with the decision. Why would he not think it's him holding back Bieniemy from getting a promotion somewhere else? Anytime you heard EB's name in coaching rumors, the one thing we kept hearing was that the Chiefs' success was a product of Reid, not Bieniemy.
If you have been watching the Chiefs for a while now, you know Bieniemy will likely kill the gig in Washington. He has all the intangibles and experience. Reid seems to think he will kill it too, as he literally listed everything Bieniemy brings to the Commanders as their new offensive coordinator.
"He's very smart, very organized, demanding," Reid continued. "He's going to make sure everybody's doing their job. He's not afraid of confrontation where somebody is not pulling their weight. He's going to make them pull their weight.
"But he's a great person. I'm very close to him. He's also one of my players. He's positive during the tough times when things aren't going so well. He's not going to be down in the dumps. He's got to kind of get everybody going and we're right there."
Honestly, it sounds like Bieniemy will be the perfect fit in Washington. They need a guy like that, and we can only expect their offense to be better than it was last season.
Now Reid can stop feeling like he was holding him back. I think soon we could see Bieniemy with a head coaching gig somewhere.
