The NFL is quarterback drunk, so it makes complete sense that about half the league is in a frenzy when it comes to the thought of acquiring Lamar Jackson.

Well, don't expect the Detroit Lions to join in the fray. Yes, they have the cap space and the draft picks to get a deal done. But, they also have a proven quarterback in Jared Goff.

And on Monday, head coach Dan Campbell made it clear that Goff will be the Lions quarterback in 2023.

"Love Goff. Goff's our guy, man," Campbell told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero at the NFL's Annual Meetings. "I think he's proven over the last two years that, man, he's made for us. He's had to endure a lot, just like all of us have. I thought he played his best football last year, and I think he's gonna come out and play some of the best this year. [I] feel good about it.

"So I love our quarterback position right now."

Goff had the best year of his career since he led the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018. He finished with the fifth-most passing touchdowns (29) and fifth-best QBR (61.1) among starting quarterbacks in 2022. His mark of 7.45 ANY/A was fourth-best, as well.

The former No. 1 overall pick proved he can operate at a high level within the Lions offense and he will be a key factor when it comes to the Lions chasing their first division title since 1993.

"When you've got a quarterback, you hold onto those guys, man," said Campbell. "If you really believe they can play, then those are your guys.

"I don't know, I don't want to get into the money. … I just know this: When you find a guy that you really believe in that can help you win, then I think you do what it takes to make sure that's your guy."

Now, granted, Goff isn't cheap. But no starting quarterback worth a damn in the NFL is. Goff has the fifth-highest cap hit in 2023, but, he's 11th among quarterbacks when it comes to average annual value.

The key, however, is 2023's and 2024's cap hits come in under Goff's annual average of $33.5 million. The most he counts against the cap is 2024 and that number comes in at $31,650,064.

This is very important because Goff is actually cheaper than what Jackson would cost the Lions on the franchise tag or with a new deal. Jackson's franchise tag is going to cost $32.4 million in 2023

It all makes more sense to keep Goff than it does to go after Jackson. The Lions are in a great position: They have a two first-rounders and a solid starting quarterback. They can use the first-rounders to beef up the front seven, nab a good tight end, or whatever they so choose. Those picks, if hit, can help establish a foundation for the next 7-10 years.

And Goff is just 28. He is under contract through 2024 and the Lions are continuing to build the team around him. There's easily a world in which Goff is the long-term answer beyond 2024.

Like Campbell says, the Lions already have their guy and they're taking the right approach when it comes to climbing the ladder to NFL relevancy.

And they don't need Jackson to get to the top.
