The Detroit Lions have done a great job so far through free agency, but there is still one more position that should earn some extra attention from Brad Holmes.
The defensive line for the Lions currently looks like the weakest link.
Most of the unit that remains on the roster for the 2023 season has either failed to develop at the expected rate or is far from being a starting-caliber player at the moment, and while it is likely that the team addresses the position in the draft, a veteran would help in the present.
Former All-Pro and Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell makes a whole lot of sense.
Campbell's name initially received attention in regards to the Lions in a now-deleted report that leads some to believe the Lions' interest wasn't true, but that doesn't mean the fit doesn't exist.
Campbell may be an older veteran, but his performance in 2022 (5.5 sacks and 14 quarterback hits) points to a player that can still contribute on a young team like the Lions, even if he starts to see his reps diminish in favor of a younger player over the course of the season.
There are a few other names on the market that may be younger and even a little cheaper, but Campbell looks like the perfect intersection between talent, price, and veteran leadership, and that is something this young defense could always use in a greater quantity.
If the Lions weren't already interested in Campbell, they may want to start paying a bit more attention in the storied free agent.
