The ninth and 10th overall picks from the 2017 NFL Draft are now teammates, though the player that was picked earlier has had a much different career than the one picked right after him.
Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross only lasted the length of his rookie contract with the team who drafted him, and he didn't do much in his second chance with the New York Giants.
Now entering his sixth year in the league, the fastest player in NFL combine history is one of the newest receivers for the Bengals' biggest playoff rival.
Ross was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs during the last week of the 2022 regular season after he spent the year not playing for any team. The futures deal he agreed to kicked in once the offseason began, as did his work with the team. And it seems he's already making an impression on head coach Andy Reid.
"Ross is extremely fast and quick," Reid said of the 27-year old who blazed a 4.22 40-yard dash. "Before he got hurt, he was on to a pretty good season. I like what I see there, too.”
The issue with Ross has never been being too slow or not quick enough, it's always been about staying on the field. His career in Cincinnati revolved around injuries, and sure enough, it ended with him on I.R. The status quo hardly changed in 2021 during his lone season with the Giants, and he went unsigned for 10 months following that season.
Kansas City picking him up has zero risk, but also limited reward at this point. It's nice to hear him picking things up in one of the best offenses in football, but expecting much from him at this point in his career is almost futile.
