The Indianapolis Colts have had a busy and active offseason to this point. From hiring a new head coach to turning the page at quarterback and everything in between, there has been very little rest for the organization.
Among the biggest decisions that was made by the Colts was trading away Pro Bowl corner Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore, albeit aging, was a bright spot during an otherwise forgettable season in Indianapolis last season.
However, the veteran defensive back simply did not fit the team's timeline. Not with a first-year head coach and a rookie signal caller. Therefore, general manager Chris Ballard made the decision to trade Gilmore to the Dallas Cowboys.
And it's that move that is being put on blast by Pro Football Focus. Because PFF analyst Sam Monson did not rank a single Colts cornerback in the top-32 at the position.
Which means that the door is open for rookies Julius Brents and Darius Rush to potentially play early. Brents is currently recovering from a hand injury that will likely keep him out until training camp. While Rush is already making plays in practices.
Meanwhile, PFF ranks Gilmore as one of the top players at his position. Gilmore lands at No. 6 in the rankings, ahead of now-Cowboys teammate Trevon Diggs, who also ranks inside the top-10.
The Colts do bring back Kenny Moore and Isaiah Rodgers Sr. in the back end of the defense. But it's difficult to ignore the possibility of the two rookies emerging sooner than later on the depth chart.
Whatever happens in that regard, the spotlight is on general manager Chris Ballard and the Indianapolis Colts. The strategy to move on from Gilmore and potentially turn to rookies right out of the gate will be put to the test.
