There is a growing level of excitement within the Tennessee Titans organization about the growth and potential of second-year wide receiver Treylon Burks.
Burks, who flashed greatness in an injury-riddled rookie season, is entering 2023 with a newfound confidence and work ethic. Having a year under his belt, Burks is one step ahead of the Titans' offseason program, and both his coaches and teammates are taking notice.
Burks is both confident and fast, running with ease and having no trouble getting through practices. A massive improvement from where he was at this point last season.
Titans wide receivers coach Rob Moore and starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill both praised Burks' growth as a player following OTAs on Wednesday.
"He's done a great job," said Moore of his 23-year-old weapon. "He's been focused since the season ended to this point. He's in great shape. Mentally, he's ahead of the game. Honestly, he's been a different player. So I'm extremely happy with where he's at."
Burks making such a noticeable jump from year one to year two has started with his commitment to himself and his team. According to a story from Paul Kuharsky, Burks went as far as renting a small Cessna plane at 5 a.m. in Bentonville, Ark. just to ensure he was at the first day of Titans OTAs after his flight was delayed.
"That kind of speaks to his commitment," Moore said of Burks' Cessna adventure. "That's something that has showed up since we've started. All I can tell you is that I'm extremely happy with where he's at right now."
The growth Moore sees in Burks' demeanor, confidence, and fitness is translating to the field. Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill said after practice on Wednesday that Burks' improvement goes all the way down to the details of each play.
"I'm really excited about what I've seen from him" Tannehill said of Burks. "He's flying around, he's moving fast, he's moving efficiently, he's in shape…All great things."
"All the little things that go along with playing the position like being able to see the field and understand the full concept as opposed to just a route…all those things. He's playing with a lot of confidence right now," said Tannehill.
Tennessee will be relying heavily on Burks in 2023 to not just take the next step, but stay on the field. If the Titans want to compete for the AFC South title, Burks needs to play 15-17 games and solidify himself as a WR1 in the NFL.
We have seen the flashes. Now it's time to see the real deal. The Treylon Burks hype train has officially left the station, and I'm all the way on board.
