Dallas Cowboys second-round rookie tight end Luke Schoonmaker stumbled into a speed bump during his first ever NFL offseason.
The tight end out of Michigan suffered a plantar fascia (foot) injury that sidelined him for multiple practices. However, head coach Mike McCarthy recently provided a positive update that should allow Cowboys fans to breathe a little easier going into this week's mandatory minicamp.
According to the Cowboys head coach, Schoonmaker will be ready to go in training camp.
The Cowboys have self-admittedly taken it easier than usual in this year's offseason. At the start of OTAs, McCarthy explained the Cowboys weren't going to run a lot of competitive drills and that even 7-on-7s would be quite limited.
After consecutive years of being fined, the team's conservative approach should also help players stay healthy and fresh before training camp kicks off in late July.
As for the rookie tight end, he can make up for the missed reps with work in the classroom. McCarthy explained earlier in the year that the team's focus would revolve around the installs of a new offense. Considering elements of Kellen Moore's offense will still be present, second-year tight end Jake Ferguson has a leg-up on the rookie.
