The Dallas Cowboys are rolling along in their offseason program this week with their mandatory minicamp kicking off. It's not just the play on the field that's being talked about these days, though.
Dallas has several of their top players who are eligible for contract extensions with guys like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Trevon Diggs at the forefront.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones spoke on the possibility of getting these extensions done soon on Monday. He expressed that the team has "touched bases with everybody" about sealing these deals.
"Guys want to wait, and I understand why because prices go up from one year to the next, but people don't seem to be in that type of hurry," said Jones. "If opportunity is there, we'd like to get one, two, three of these guys signed."
That's the smart way to think.
The Cowboys have a little leeway with Lamb due to his fifth-year option being picked up, they have him locked in through 2024. However, Diggs is in a contract year, and the cornerback and wide receiver markets will only rise the more they aren't extended.
Prescott has a potential out option in his contract after the 2023 season and Terence Steele will be an unrestricted free agent in 2024. So, the Cowboys have a lot of particulars to work out, and that means making sure it's good for all parties involved.
"Timing has to be right for those guys and right for us, but our goal would be hopefully to start to chip away at this because we've got guys that have to be addressed moving forward," Jones said. "There's no specific order, it's just about when opportunity arises and you got to be motivated to want to do it."
Jones said the goal is to get one or a few of these extensions done before training camp next month in Oxnard, California. So, we shall see.
