The Dallas Cowboys coaching staff will look a little different soon, at least for a while.

William Gay, a former fifth-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been accepted into the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship and will join the Cowboys staff.

"I didn’t get drafted this past weekend but his email definitely got me feeling like it’s 2007," Gay posted on Instagram.

Established in 1987, this program provides training camp positions every year for minority coaches which last throughout the preseason schedule. Walsh, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, introduced the program to the league after he brought in a group of minority coaches to the 49ers' training camp.

The Cowboys have had success going this route.

Current assistant defensive line coach Sharrif Floyd graduated from the program before he got hired. Former coaches Leon Lett and the late Gary Brown went through the program also as well as former player and intern Tashard Choice.

Gay isn't a stranger to being a coach.

In 2019, Gay was a coaching intern for the Steelers. He served as the defensive backs coach for Missouri State in 2020 but stepped away to raise his son.

Now, Gay will work with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and secondary coach Al Harris as he tries to begin a long career as a tenured NFL coach.
