The New York Giants surprised some folks when they traded up one singular spot in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Many people questioned the move, simply because it was just one pick ahead of their original selection.

The Giants knew what they were doing, though. They had feelers out around the league and knew other teams wanted to move in front of them for a cornerback.

After the move up, the Giants grabbed a CB prospect who they loved, Deonte Banks. They love Banks' physical traits and aggressive nature in the secondary. He is a scheme fit for Wink Martindale's defense. Jeremy Fowler discussed New York's insight pre-draft.

The Giants leaned on their own analysis of how the draft would play out to locate cornerback help late in the first round. They eyed Maryland's Deonte Banks but had to be strategic — three corners had gone off the board by the 17th pick, and New York forecasted that, even with a four-man receiver run to come, Banks very well could be gone if they sat tight at No. 25. The Giants believed Kansas City and at least one other team was looking to move up. So they swung a deal with Jacksonville to move up one spot.

The move was a smart one by NYG. They knew which CB they preferred, and they made sure no one moved just ahead of them to steal Banks.
