Early praise for Baker Mayfield is more smoke from the Buccaneers

While Bruce Arians has proven himself to be one of the best coaches to ever lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the one area where he falls flat from time to time is when he lacks his characteristic honesty that has defined his career.
For 90% of the time, Arians is about as blunt as can be when addressing his players to the media. If someone made a mistake, Arians is almost always the first to comment.
However, there are some instances where Arians goes against his nature and shows support to players when the rest of the world knows otherwise. It looks like that is what has happened for Arians with his recent praise towards Baker Mayfield.
Everyone has probably seen this one make the rounds by now. This isn't the craziest thing Arians has said during his coaching career, but some of his recent takes on quarterback play take some of the wind out of these sails.
A compliment towards Mayfield today because he is on the Bucs is a good thing. Everyone has known that Arians has liked Mayfield for a while now. But Arians has also shown some faith in quarterbacks that didn't deserve it during the past few years, and that makes this seem like more of the same.
Arians was spot-on in his decision to bring Tom Brady to Tampa, but he also drafted Kyle Trask and believed Blaine Gabbert was a legitimate option to lead this team in the absence of Brady.
Call it hubris or a lack of awareness, the recent years haven't been as kind to Arians' takes on the position as the ones when he started his time with the franchise.
Bucs fans may love to hear something like this before a season where there is a lot of uncertainty, but the fanbase needs to see this for what it truly is; a way to calm fears far more than it is a shining endorsement of a new player.
