The Texans made many moves this offseason, but perhaps none will prove more impactful than a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In March after the initial wave of free agency subsided, the Texans landed one of the most reliable offensive linemen in the league, and all it cost was a 2023 sixth-round pick. The cap-strapped Bucs were looking to unload salary, which is why the Texans were able to land Shaq Griffin for such a low price.
Many applauded the deal at the time, but it looks even better for Houston after the latest reports.
Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Texans are nearing an agreement with Mason on a three-year, $36M extension. The deal includes $22M guaranteed and a $10M signing bonus. Mason was previously set to enter free agency following the 2023 season.
Mason will make $12M per season and become one of the top-10 highest-paid guards in the league. This is after the massive blocker started all 17 games for Tampa in 2022 and received an impressive 68.9 grade from PFF.
Mason has never played in a Pro Bowl, but he has been deserving of the honor. The former Yellow Jacket has consistently been graded as one of the most effective blockers in the league, per PFF.
The addition of Mason could be game-changing for the Texans. The interior offensive line in Houston was a mess in 2022, and a solid veteran presence like Mason could be all the difference. Mason, along with star left tackle Laremy Tunsil, provide two elite pillars for a young offensive line to lean on.
Upon arriving in Houston, Mason described the city as the "perfect place," for him to play. Mason will now get to enjoy Houston for a little longer.
