Sam Darnold to lead the 49ers to promise land, at least some people think he can
On ESPN’s Get Up, Dan Orlovsky admitted that he believes Sam Darnold can lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship game.
The Sam Darnold publicity machine must be in full swing because on ESPN's morning show "Get Up," Dan Orlovsky offered a bold assurance of the now passed-around former face of the Jets franchise starting quarterback.
"Sam Darnold is absolutely capable of taking this team back to the NFC Championship Game," Orlovsky said Monday during "Get Up" on ESPN. "I'm so excited to watch him if he's the guy in San Francisco with Brock Purdy a little bit banged up. Finally at a place that has the coaching, the offensive talent, the complete team to allow his talent — one of the best talents that we've seen come out of college in years.
"I'm so excited, and I think he could be the guy that brings them back to the NFC Championship Game."
It is hard to imagine a quarterback room order as Darnold, Trey Lance, Brock Purdy, and Brandon Allen, but Orlovsky appears to believe, if given the chance, Darnold has what it takes to help the Niners make it to their third straight NFC Championship game.
It may be one of this year's most freezing cold takes.
Darnold was signed to a one-year deal. The Niners' interest in Darnold dates back to his year in the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent the first three years of his career on the Jets, where he struggled and admitted to seeing ghosts on the field.
Darnold was then traded to the Carolina Panthers, where his struggles only continued.
Working in Darnold's favor is the fact that he hasn't had organizational stability in his career and the Niners are the model of stability. If he is going to turn into the quarterback he was meant to be, it will happen in San Francisco or it won't happen at all.
But to go as far as to say Darnold could lead the Niners to a championship game feels like a stretch. Let's see him string together five winning weeks before he is coronated as the next Joe Montana.
