The Dallas Cowboys are set to begin rookie minicamp this weekend. However, they got some contractual business taken care of beforehand.
Dallas has signed second-round tight end Luke Schoonmaker and sixth-round cornerback Eric Scott Jr. to their rookie deals.
Schoonmaker's deal is expected to land him around $6.3 million for four seasons. Per Todd Archer of ESPN, Scott's contract is reported to be $4 million for four years with a signing bonus of $218,308.
Once Dalton Schultz went to the Houston Texans in free agency, tight end was pretty much a lock as a position that the Cowboys would hit in the NFL Draft. A lot of experts thought Utah's Dalton Kincaid or Notre Dame’s Michael Mayer would be the selection in the first round, but the Cowboys took defensive tackle, Mazi Smith.
Getting Schoonmaker in the second is probably a round or two early. However, at 6'5" and 251 pounds Schoonmaker posted a 35.5-inch vertical jump and a 10'7" in the broad jump which speaks to his athleticism.
Schoonmaker maker will fit right in with the Cowboys' 12 personnel package as a blocker and he knows how to find open spots on the field to be an effective chain mover. With Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and Sean McKeon in the mix as well, the Cowboys' tight group is stacked.
Scott is a Dan Quinn prototype at the cornerback spot at 6'1" and 204 pounds with incredible length due to his 80-inch wingspan. He was clocked at 4.72 in the 40-yard dash but tweaked his quad beforehand. Scott was also said to have run 4.42 by other evaluators, and the Cowboys did a lot of homework in that area when it came to drafting Scott.
He'll likely have to contribute on special teams quite a bit with the depth the Cowboys have at cornerback. However, Scott has all the athletic traits (40-inch vertical, 11'1" in the broad) and promising ball skills to possibly be an excellent depth piece in the secondary.
