The New England Patriots won’t be able to present the full picture of their new-look offensive line under new assistant Adrian Klemm in their first practices of the offseason.
That’s because starting right guard Michael Onwenu isn’t expected to practice during organized team activities this week after undergoing surgery on his ankle, ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported Sunday morning.
Reiss described it as a lingering ankle injury but also noted that Buffalo Bills defensive lineman DaQuan Jones landed on the back of Onwenu’s legs in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ final game last season, forcing the offensive lineman to miss the final six snaps of the season.
Onwenu has also played right tackle and left guard during the course of his Patriots career since being selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He’s settled into right guard, however, with 2022 first-round pick Cole Strange at left guard and veteran free-agent pickup Riley Reiff expected to play right tackle this season. If Reiff doesn’t start at right tackle, then that job likely would be manned by Trent Brown.
We’ll find out Thursday when media members are allowed at Gillette Stadium for the Patriots’ first open OTAs session who will be filling in for Onwenu. New England’s options are James Ferentz, Conor McDermott, Chasen Hines, Bill Murray, Kody Russey, Andrew Stueber or rookies Jake Andrews, Sidy Sow and Atonio Mafi.
Andrews, Sow and Mafi all were selected early on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Onwenu has been one of New England’s best overall players in his Patriots tenure. He let up just one sack last season while leading all Patriots offensive players in snaps.
Klemm took over for Matt Patricia as the Patriots’ offensive line coach. Reiff is expected to replace Isaiah Wynn — who signed as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins — as a starter. The Patriots also have a new offensive coordinator, QB coach and play-caller in Bill O'Brien.
