There will be plenty of new faces on the New Orleans Saints in 2022 highlighted by quarterback Derek Carr. An established veteran on the roster, however, got quite the compliment thrown his way recently.
Demario Davis came to the Saints in 2018 to secure their linebacker room. Since that time, Davis has been named an All-Pro four times and even won the Bart Starr Award in 2021.
When Pro Football Focus announced its top 30 players under 30, Davis made the list at No.18 between wide receiver Keenan Allen of the Los Angeles Chargers and edge rusher Za'Darius Smith of the Cleveland Browns.
Davis started his career slowly, never grading above 62.4 from 2012 to 2016. In 2017, Davis found his stride and has not graded below 73.7 since.
In his 30s, Davis has been one of the best run-defending linebackers in the NFL and has given up just two touchdowns in coverage over the past two seasons. The Saints star put up an 82.7 PFF grade in 2022, a top-four mark at the position.
Speaking of his 30s, Davis hit that milestone in 2019 which was his first All-Pro campaign. Davis has had over 100 tackles in each season of his 30s as well, and his 6.5 sacks last year were a career-high. So, it's safe to say that Davis is getting better with age as far as his performance.
The consistency with Davis has been there since his career started.
After being a rotational guy as a rookie for the New York Jets, Davis became a regular starter in 2013 and racked up 106 tackles. He then followed that up with 116 and 90 before he was picked up by the Cleveland Browns in free agency.
Davis only spent one season in Cleveland but he put up 99 tackles and two sacks. He was then traded back to the Jets in 2017, and he had a career-high 135 tackles as well as five sacks.
Reliable and productive are perfect words to describe Davis. His ability to navigate sideline-to-sideline against the run, get sacks, and drop in coverage are still elite and it's made him one of the better defensive players around the league.
